  1. Aug 25,  · Overall, 'Cryptic Writings' is a largely underrated album. It has an excellent sound, and consistently strong songs from start to finish, and if you can accept that the days of 80's thrash metal are dead and gone (and metal in general wasn't a hot prospect in either), then you'll find this to be one of the standout releases in Megadeth's 4/5().
  2. Cryptic Writings continues this evolution, which unfortunately reads better than it plays. Megadeth doesn't quite have the skill or imagination to craft such ambitious material; they sound better playing thrash, which they only occasionally do on Cryptic Writings. Essentially, the band sounds tired and listless instead of reflective, especially since the production is so slick.5/

  4. The first , copies of Cryptic Writings in the U.S. were released with silver background album cover. Instrumentally, the band introduced a more melodic mix than the previous albums, chock-full of crunchy riffs, and speed-of-light guitar solos.
  5. May 07,  · Megadeth's 7th studio long player, Cryptic Writings, is one that can be tricky to wrap a finger around what role the album plays in the bands evolution. The album that came before it, 's Youthanasia, was certainly a well-produced and performed affair/5().
